Description:
Redevelopment project for the National Slate Museum in Llanberis, aiming to enhance facilities, interpret the slate landscape of North-West Wales, and create new gallery and learning spaces funded by various sources including the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Welsh Government.
Redevelopment of the National Slate Museum, Llanberis. Since 2018, there has been an identified need to invest in and redevelop the National Slate Museum, with Amgueddfa Cymru starting work with organisational stakeholders to define the need and opportunities. In 2021, the slate landscape of North-West Wales was given UNESCO World Heritage Status. As part of the World Heritage Status Management Plan, the National Slate Museum is the designated hub for the interpretation of the slate landscape of north-west Wales. Funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Welsh Government and Cyngor Gwynedd's Lewyrch o'r Llechi project via UK Levelling Up Funding now offers a real opportunity to re-imagine and re-define the museum within a range of contextual settings – from the hyper-local to the global through the newly achieved UNESCO World Heritage status In addition to conservation and refurbishment of the Grade 1 buildings and original industrial infrastructure there will be a series of access improvements, innovative and sensitively-designed additional gallery space and a contemporary but sympathetic new-build cafe and learning space in newly landscaped surroundings.
