I. General

The GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research GmbH (GSI) is an independent large-scale research institution that operates one of the world's leading particle accelerator facilities for research.

GSI is a limited liability company (GmbH). The shareholders are the federal government at 90 percent, the state of Hesse at eight percent, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Free State of Thuringia at one percent each. GSI is a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization. The purpose of the non-profit organization is the construction and operation of heavy ion accelerator facilities and research work with heavy ions. The company is mainly financed by grants from the public sector and other funding bodies.

About 1,500 people are employed at GSI. In addition, around 1,000 scientists from universities and other research laboratories around the world come every year to use the facility for experiments.

With the FAIR project (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), a state-of-the-art particle accelerator and experimental facility for basic and applied research is being realized at the site of the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI GmbH) in Darmstadt. This facility is financed and built in international cooperation with currently 10 partner states in Darmstadt (state of Hesse).

Further information about GSI and FAIR can be found on the Internet at http://www.gsi.de/.

GSI as the awarding body also procures for the Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM) and the Helmholtz Institute Jena (HIJ)

II. Initial situation

The Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM) would like to procure the hardware specified below to replace an existing (about 6 years old) high-performance computing (HPC) file server, which will finally be out of maintenance at the end of 2023.

4-JBOD (just a bunch of disks) enclosures are to be procured, including the described hard disks, cables, as well as the specified support levels.

The place of performance is the campus of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

III. Specification of JBOD systems

There will be 4 JBOD systems, each with the following specifications:

- Dell ME484 oder Seagate EXOS E 5U84, dual redundant Powersupply, dual expander

- 84 hard disks each 20 TB server disks, 7200 rpm, certified for 24x7 operation, disks with shingled magnetic recording are not permitted,

- 5 years on-site service

- 4 SAS HD cable lengths: 2x1 m, 2x1.5 m

The maintenance level is comparable to the Dell Pro Support Next Businessday for 5 years or equivalent. This means pre-replacement of customer service parts (especially hard drives) and Next Businessday on-site repair for everything else.

Information on the offer price

GSI has a total of EUR 260,000 at its disposal for the procurement of at least 4 JBOD systems. On the quotation form, you enter the unit price for a system - as described above - and order 4 or a maximum of as many as can be ordered for a maximum of EUR 260,000.
