The state of Rhineland-Palatinate (RLP) has a large number of grassland habitat types that are important for nature conservation.

Habitat types of grassland are among the most species-rich habitat types in Central Europe and are therefore of great importance for the preservation of biological diversity and thus also for the achievement of state-wide goals such as the Rhineland-Palatinate Biodiversity Strategy.

Therefore, many of the biotopes are protected by law according to § 30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) (= § 30 biotope types). Many of them are also a habitat type according to Annex I of the Habitats Directive (FFH-LRT). Due to the amendment of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Nature Conservation Act (LNatSchG RLP of 6 October 2015), in addition to the § 30 biotope types of the BNatschG, lean lowland hay meadows, mountain hay meadows and nutrient-poor pastures were also placed under special legal protection in RLP (= § 15 biotope types). Due to the amendment of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, the lean lowland hay meadows and mountain hay meadows as well as orchards have also been protected by § 30 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act since 01.03.2022.

The grassland mapping Rhineland-Palatinate is the state-wide recording of these species-rich grassland biotopes protected by § 30 BNatSchG, §15 LNatSchG RLP and by the FFH Directive and is part of the state-wide biotope cadastre. In the coming years, the mapping will be carried out successively throughout Rhineland-Palatinate by processing several districts per year spread over the entire federal state.

In 2024, the grassland mapping RLP is now to be continued in the following two districts and one independent city:
