The palace gardens of Blankenburg belong to the monument conservation, tourist state project "Garden Dreams - Historical Parks in Saxony-Anhalt". With an area of over 100 hectares, the garden ensemble between the Great and Small Palaces is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt. This park is of supra-regional importance, enjoys many visitors and is a listed building. Impressive is the terraced garden or baroque garden, which was laid out from 1718. At this time, the County of Blankenburg was expanded into an imperial principality. As an expression of courtly representation, the small pleasure garden complex with today's Small Castle was created. Fountains, sandstone figures, vases, colourful flower borders and precisely laid out hedges reflect the basic Baroque form to this day.
The Great Palace Park boasts an approximately 200-year-old avenue of chestnuts. The road connections from the 17th and 18th centuries still exist here today. The romantic castle pond was part of the water supply system of the inner-city mills and the fountains in the terraced, mountain and pheasant garden.
The historic tree population in the castle park is severely threatened by fungi and harmful insects. Many trees have already had to be felled for reasons of hazard prevention. Climate change does not stop at the existing path structure. Roads damaged by heavy rainfall events are to be innovatively rehabilitated.
The replanting of climate-resistant trees and shrubs is planned in the central castle park in order to preserve biodiversity in the park and counteract climate change. Roads damaged by heavy rainfall events are to be rehabilitated.
