The district of Darmstadt-Dieburg intends to build the 2nd construction phase of the outdoor facility of the Hessenwaldschule in Gräfenhausen, Weiterstadt and to renovate and expand the existing sports facility. In addition, the access road and the parking situation will be rebuilt. A "parent taxi" traffic concept is available. In 2011, during the competition process for the new construction of the school building, the "Pixel" preliminary design for the outdoor facility was created. The different pixels are assigned different functions and uses. On the open space, which is to remain as natural as possible, various "pixels" are erected for movement, learning and design with nature. The 2nd construction phase is defined by three areas:
Outdoor area as a vegetation area with student offers - approx. 12,000 m²
Sports facility – approx. 3,500 m²
Traffic area - 2,000 m²

The school building was completed in 2016 along with the 1st construction phase of the outdoor area. On the open space of the 2nd construction phase stood the old school. The demolition of the old building took place by June 2023. In addition to the individual "pixel" offers, an extension in the form of a modular building approx. 300m² and a depot for the base caretaker approx. 300m² are planned. The extensions (modular construction and depot) are to be taken into account in the overall concept of the outdoor facilities. They will be executed at a later date. The routing within the school grounds is not clearly defined. The pixels are freely located in the meadow areas. The paths are "created" by the use of the students. A fastening for the "paths" is not provided.

Description of procurement Freedom
The size of the planning area of the outdoor facility is to be divided and divided into 3 basic functional areas:
1. Outdoor area consisting of vegetation areas and pixel-like structure with leisure facilities approx. 12,000 m². Of this, approx. 700 m² will be allocated to existing building structures in the future.
2. Sports facility approx. 3,500m²
3. Traffic area (parent taxi) approx. 2,000m²
The schoolyard must be designed in such a way that the different needs of the children are taken into account during breaks and free times. So there must be areas that on the one hand enable movement-oriented play and romp, on the other hand there should be zones of calm and “in the green”.
In order to locate the main building of the Hessenwaldschule, the motif of the clearing is taken up in the existing preliminary design in the surrounding forest landscape by forming and reinforcing the 'forest edge' and further developed as a theme in the open space.
The 'tree pixels' in the clearing as mediators between the built space and the edge of the forest deliberately consist of a special tree species and reflect the typical vegetation of the clearings.
This naturally creates a pleasant, manageable open space embedded in the forest, which accommodates the numerous functions for the different age groups of the comprehensive school. Meeting places and common areas are to be designed in such a way that pupils can use protected areas for smaller groups as well as areas where the school community as a whole can come together, the same applies to school staff.
For the storage of outdoor playground equipment and garden tools, a depot with storage areas must be kept free during planning.
Attention must be paid to barrier-free access and sufficient outdoor areas protected from the sun and rain.
The objective is to complete the 2nd construction phase at the beginning of the 2026/27 school year.
Budget:
For budgetary reasons, the construction costs for the construction project should not exceed the amount of € 2,796,743.00 net, as of 06/2023.
