The municipality of Beernem currently has a municipal primary school 'De Notelaar' located in the Knesselarestraat in Oedelem. The building (built in 1976) has become very outdated over the years and is subject to clearly visible wear. Various renovation and expansion files were already worked out for the current site in the past, but recently the Beernem municipal council reached an agreement with GO! School group related to the Medical Pedagogical Institute De Bevertjes to develop a renovation and new construction project on their site located in the Beernemstraat in Oedelem. MPI De Bevertjes would in turn move to Bruges.
The site located in the Beernemstraat has a total surface area of approximately 15,000 square meters.
The municipality of Beernem reached an agreement to purchase +/- 7 150 square meters of this. This concerns the rear part of the site where the multipurpose hall and the boarding school are now located. These buildings are to be partly integrated in a renovation and new construction project consisting mainly of a municipal school and supplemented with an out-of-school childcare, a green zone and space for associations such as a Royal Harmony and a choir.
The site must also be accessed in a safe way and be easily accessible for the current +/- 180 students, as well as be provided for a limited future increase in the number of students.
The ambition is to start construction work in the autumn of 2022 or at the latest in the spring of 2023.
A subsidy application is currently already underway for an infrastructure project in mainstream primary education at Agion (Agency for Infrastructure in Education). They act as arbitrators in this file and will have to give their approval before the final award of the tender can be proceeded.
The designer / engineering office is expected to draw up specifications in consultation with the municipal services in order to find the most suitable contractor to carry out the assignment. When drawing up the specifications, the currently imposed physical standards of AGION must be taken into account with a view to the best possible solution within the subsidy of the tender dossier.
