The Federal Office for Radiation Protection is conducting an epidemiological cohort study with approximately 64,000 former employees of Wismut. Every five years, the data of the cohort members (vital status and, if applicable, cause of death) are updated in a mortality follow-up. So far, five mortality follow-ups have already taken place, most recently as of 31.12.2018. On this date, 38.3% of the cohort members were still alive, 58.4% had died and for 3.3% the vital status could not be determined. For 96% of the deceased cohort members, the cause of death could be determined.
In this project, in a sixth mortality follow-up on the cut-off date of 31.12.2023, the vital status of the approximately 24,000 cohort members still alive is to be determined based on the last known registration address and the cause of death for the persons who have died in the meantime.
