The requirements for the competence that GIEK has a need for can include, amongst other things:

— Technical and operational evaluatio of ships and rigging: This will typically be for offshore related ships (e.g. PSV, AHTS, OCV, subsea ship), drilling vessels, (e.g. Jackup, semi sub, drilling ship), accommodation vessel (jackup, semi, ship), and FPSO/FSO, but there can also be other types of ships and offshore related fittings.

— Construction follow up at the shipyard: This can include, amongst other things, follow up of construction assignments in order to ensure progess and quality

— Technical evaluation of shipyards (includes an evaluation of risk evaluation of shipyards):

This will include an evaluation of a shipyard's capacity and the ability to construct certain ships, rigging or other vessels.

The extent and type of the technical competence can vary a lot.
