We are looking for a state-of-the-art gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system that is optimized for structure elucidation and characterization of unknown substances. The configuration includes a gas chromatograph with thermal desorption (ideally with sample recovery, "retrapping" or "recollection") and autosampler for coupling to a high-resolution mass spectrometer (resolution ? 20 k, accuracy ? 1 ppm, scan rate > 10 Hz) with soft ionization to allow alternative coupling with liquid chromatography. For the main application with gas chromatography, the system must have a very good sensitivity even for small substances starting with m/z 50. Ideally, the mass spectrometer allows a change of polarity within the measurement. Other performance parameters include the ability to perform accurate MS/MS analysis with the most precise selection of the precursor ion and the most efficient fragmentation, as well as state-of-the-art software tools for structure elucidation and quantification from complex samples. In addition, the robust operation of the entire device structure with low maintenance requirements should be ensured.
