The right-hand dike on the Elbe west of the village of Schönhausen (Elbe) is being upgraded in accordance with the current requirements for a flood protection system. In this case, an elevation and landside widening will be carried out while retaining the existing route.

Previous expansion measures were not carried out on the basis of the new design water levels determined after 2013 (as of 05/2015). In order to achieve continuous flood protection on the Jerichow - Havelberg section on the basis of the design water levels, it is necessary to upgrade the dike from km 49.95 to 50.70.

From April 1945, infantry fighting positions were expanded along the dike. The recognizable reinforcement of positions as well as the defensive battles of German units along the Havelberg - Jerichow dike line to secure the Tangermünde bridgehead suggest battles here. In the area of the path leading to the foreland at km 50.6, several changing positions for mobile artillery have probably been prepared. According to the assumed causation scenarios of ground fighting and ammunition destruction, it is very likely that weapons, ammunition and equipment were deposited in the study area (UG) along the defensive lines supported on the dike.

Explosive ordnance finds are known from the preparatory and construction-accompanying explosive ordnance clearance of the north and south subsequent rehabilitation sections as well as from the salvage of occasional finds during the dike upgrading in 2011.

The expansion of the position had not yet been completed at the time of the flight on 17.04.1945. Aerial image-visible positioning systems can be seen both in the top of the dike and in the water-side embankment. The adjoining room on the land side is covered with trees and is not visible to the air. In the area of the dense tree population, storage sites of German associations are suspected.

In accordance with the statement of the district of Stendal dated 29.07.2022, explosive ordnance clearance must be carried out in the designated dike section as well as for the construction of necessary ancillary areas before ground-interfering measures.
