It is a three-storey laboratory building that is to meet the space requirements of the ML4Q Cluster of Excellence. After the cluster has moved out, it will be available to the entire Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNF). Agreements with users on the room and function program in the course of planning must be carried out and part of the order. Since the building is to be erected in the long term, great importance is placed on the design of the façade. Innovative, future-oriented and at the same time feasible solutions with limited financial resources are expected, as well as a holistic view of the building. Due to its proximity to the residential development Wilhelm-Waldeyer Straße, great emphasis is placed on low-emission and low-emission solutions (e.g. sound). The implementation of the requirements of engineering and quality standards of the University of Cologne must be observed. Certification according to DGNB or BNB is sought.

The technology required for the function of the building is to be obtained partly from the existing physics building. The planning and implementation of the outdoor facilities surrounding the building with transition to the existing building are part of the order in comparison with the higher-level planning of outdoor installations physics.
