The municipality is responsible for organising clinical veterinary duty services. The veterinary duty scheme was established pursuant to the Act dated 15 June 2001 on veterinary surgeons and other animal health personnel, section 3a. The veterinary duty scheme shall ensure that the municipality/municipalities establish a clinical duty for veterinary surgeons in all parts of the country, so that necessary veterinary help can be obtained outside ordinary working hours. The veterinary duty scheme is a necessary part of the stand-by against serious infectious animal diseases and it is important for maintaining good animal welfare.

veterinary duty scheme was established pursuant to the Act from 15.06.2001 no. 75 on veterinary surgeons and other
animal health personnel, Section 3 a. The veterinary duty scheme shall ensure that
a clinical veterinarian duty service is established nationwide under municipal/inter-municipal management so that essential veterinary help can be obtained outside of regular working hours. The veterinary duty scheme is a necessary part of the stand-by against serious infectious animal diseases and it is important for maintaining good animal welfare. This procurement is for the provision of veterinary duty services in Sandnessjøen duty area, which comprises Alstahaug and Leirfjord Municipalities. To cover the veterinary duty scheme’s need for veterinarians, a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 contracts will be signed in this contest. A more detailed description of the number of contracts that will be signed and the requirements for cooperation between the veterinarians are in points 6.2 and 6.3 below.
