Bundesstraße 188 connects the middle center of Gifhorn with the upper center of Wolfsburg and, as a busy west-east axis, is an important part of the trunk road network in Lower Saxony.
Constantly increasing traffic figures - especially commuter traffic to the industrial and work location Wolfsburg - require the 4-lane expansion of the B188 in the planned section from the BAB39 to the K5.
The planned expansion was registered for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030, checked and, as a result, included in the "further requirements with planning rights". Planning can begin on this basis. The Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport - Wolfenbüttel Division (NLStBV-GB WF) begins with the basic determination for the establishment of the design documents required for the expansion project.
Currently, the licensing authority is running a scoping procedure to "inform about the documents to be provided" to determine the contents of the investigation to be submitted by the developer in accordance with § 16 UVPG - in accordance with § 15 UVPG.
The aim of the planning is to create an efficient road connection in the vicinity of the industrial location Wolfsburg.
As part of a compulsory analysis of the planned project, a traffic volume of over 30,000 vehicles / 24 hours was forecast in the expansion section (traffic studies by the city of Wolfsburg on the development of industrial areas, SBI 2015). For the expansion, this results in the requirement for a 4-lane expansion of the federal road.
The existing sections must be widened accordingly. The existing 4-lane road section, AS VW-Tor Nord - K 5, needs the least structural changes.
The length of the entire planning section is 5.2 km.
