Knokke-Heist is the proud owner of a kursaal that was built in 1929 to the design of architect Léon Stynen. Thanks in part to the frescoes by René Magritte, this building is considered a real temple of culture but, partly due to its outdated infrastructure, can no longer offer the desired high-quality total experience, nor support it. That is why the Municipality of Knokke-Heist invites national and international architectural firms to apply to thoroughly redefine this location.
The assignment needs a versatile approach in which, in respect of Stynen's original design, it can be reconstructed, restored, but in which there is certainly enough room for qualitative contemporary architectural interventions. The entire environment of the course eel is also an integral part of the assignment. The aim is to create a new beacon that will give a new dimension to our municipality in the next hundred years and give the place the allure of yesteryear.
