EASME wishes to enter into a service contract to assess the potential of algae to contribute to the EU’s climate, food and biodiversity strategies under the 2019 EU Green Deal proposal resetting the Commission's commitment to achieving zero emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 with economic growth decoupled from resource use. Specific need include the estimation of
(i) the nutritional yield from algae for different species, cultivated in marine waters and inland; ii) the production costs and greenhouse gas emissions of algae production benchmarked against the production of equivalent land based crops such as soya; and
(iii) the carbon price that would allow for production systems that use flue gas sources of carbon dioxide to break even; as well as the mapping of the land area that could be used for production of algae; and the estimation of the proportion of an animal’s feed requirements that could be met by algae. The tasks to be carried out by the contractor are further detailed in the tender specifications in section 1.
