The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has the central responsibility for the care and management of Sweden's protected areas, the county administrative board is the administrator at county level for the state-protected natural and cultural environment areas. There are currently 228 nature reserves, a national park and a large number of Natura 2000 areas and conservation areas in Västernorrland.

Every year, the county administrative boards in Sweden receive management and management grants from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, this to conduct administrative and management work in the counties. The County Administrative Board, in turn, works with outside contractors, who are procured to carry out the practical work in each area.
