In 2007 Sport Ireland (at the time the Irish Sports Council), initiated and developed a system for monitoring sports participation among adults in Ireland. That system is known as the Irish Sports Monitor (ISM). Between 2007 and 2021 the ISM has been repeated at regular intervals resulting in the production of sports participation reports for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 as well as the generation of a considerable amount of data on sports participation over the period some of which has been lodged with the Irish Social Science Data Archive (ISSDA) .
