1. Park area
During a devastating storm in 1968, a large part of the old trees in the Thurnau castle park, especially the historic linden avenue along the former Mailbahn, fell victim. As a result, the plant had to be closed to the public for traffic safety reasons. Since then, there have been several attempts to reopen the park and at least partially return it to (limited) public use. However, the private ownership of the land was a decisive obstacle when it came to implementing the plans for the restoration and reopening of the park.
At the beginning of 2022, the market town of Thurnau was finally able to purchase the entire castle park area after lengthy negotiations and the acquisition of the necessary subsidy funds. It is now planned to repair the facility in accordance with the preservation order and make it accessible to the public. Since Thurnau Castle Park is a garden monument according to Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act, it was necessary to carry out a comprehensive preliminary investigation of the existing building in coordination with the monument authorities as a basis for the renovation and restoration. Initially, this included the precise recording of the structural and vegetable inventory of the historic complex. Based on this, a renovation concept was developed that both does justice to the garden monument and allows it to be used appropriately for the property.
2. Tea and Ice House
The teahouse is a massive structure consisting of double-shell outer walls and a flat pitched gable roof construction. In the building there is a large room and three small adjoining rooms.
In the future, the teahouse will be used as an unheated room for simple public events during the summer months.
The ice house is a massive structure in which there is only one room.
The multi-layer outer walls have a thickness of approximately 1.35 meters. A capped ceiling is installed as a ceiling. The façade is made of exposed brickwork in visual quality. Access to the attic is via a steel staircase and a doorway in the eastern gable wall. The northern, southern and western outer walls have no openings.
The ice house is to be used as a guest room, and the tenant of the neighbouring restaurant is available as the operator.
A cantilevered extension to the west is intended to increase the usable area. The extension is to be planned as a light wood-glass construction.
In the case of the ice house, the roof structure must be renewed, the façade must also be cleaned and renovated, and new plaster must be applied in the building. A load-bearing reinforced concrete slab is to be installed as the floor, on which natural stone will be laid as a floor covering. The building is to be heated by a heat pump and underfloor heating, it is intended for year-round use. The floor in the extension is an insulated wooden construction, here wooden planks are provided as covering. In the electrical installation, high-quality lighting is provided for the guest room.
