The city of Bochum plans to realize the House of Knowledge (HdW, working title) in the historic post office building opposite the town hall on Willy-Brandt-Platz. The heart of the HdW is the previous central location of the city library, the Bochum adult education center, the merger of Bochum universities (UniverCity) and a market hall. These offers are to be rethought in terms of content and space as part of the planning and design of the building for a future-oriented house. The project office installed by the city will be in charge of this, which has been working on the building and usage concept since 2019 and during planning. The goal is to create an open, metropolitan meeting place that sets standards for lifelong learning, experiencing and experiencing. The particular challenge will be the implementation of these new requirements for the usability and quality of public spaces.
The stock comprises about 16,730 m² GFA (without courtyard), of which about 16,000 m² are expected to be usable for the new functions. Deutsche Telekom's existing technology and the historic façade facing Viktoriastraße and Willy-Brand-Platz are to be retained. According to the announcement, 13,500 m² of usable space is to be developed through the architectural design in the existing building and the inner courtyard.
