A holding tank system will be procured including toilets for handling of faeces from patients who are treated with I-131 in connection with thyroid gland cancer.
Total activity on I-131 for 2019 was 450 GBq.
Planned total activity for I-131 in 2030 is 2255 GBq.
Maximum patient dose is 30 GBq with an average patient dose of 5 GBq.
Each patient will be isolated for around three days.
The isolation rooms will also be used for non-radioactive patients (newly operated patients etc.).
There is no clear Norwegian limit for permitted radioactive discharge from a tank system. The exception limits for I-131 as radioactive waste are 10 Bq/g and 10 kBq/year, but the hospital has allowance to exceed this limit. The hospital has permission per 2021 for emission of 650 Gbq/year (I-131).
The primary goal for this project is to reduce the radioactive waste as much as practically possible for the three isolation rooms.
