The UK Atomic Energy Authority is a non departmental government body carrying out research into the potential of nuclear fusion as a future source of energy.
The Authority operates MAST, which forms part of the UK & European Fusion Programme with the aim of magnetically confining and studying the behaviour of a plasma in conditions and dimensions approaching those required in a fusion reactor.
MAST Upgrade is a programme designed to update the machine and push the limits of operations even closer.
The MAST machine compromises of a vacuum vessel made of a cylindrical shell, two circular end plates and a thin centre tube in the middle, providing access and location for resistive coils and services in the vault created. Plasma facing surfaces are covered by tiles made of fine grain, high density isotropic graphite.
The objective of this contract is the manufacture of graphite armour tiles.
Typical material properties of the material are given below:
Bulk Density greater or equal to 1 820 kg/m
The scope of work for the production of the graphite armour tiles (but is not limited to):
Manufacture of all jigs and fixtures.
Manufacture and machining of test pieces to demonstrate tolerances and fit.
Manufacture and machining of all tiles to final dimensions.
Dimensional inspection of all components.
Qualification of processes such as cleaning & heat treatment.
Vacuum baking and cleaning of the components to UHV standards.
Packaging & Delivery
The works are to be carried out in an acceptably safe
and environmentally responsible manner and all
personnel are to be suitably qualified and experienced
for the nature of the contract.
