To be able to include the Road to Heiwick in the cycle route network, the Road to Zutendaal must be crossed. A new bicycle bridge will guarantee a safe crossing here. The bridge will be no less than 294 meters long. Just as with a wooden railway bridge or the former mine corridors with wooden struts, a fine-meshed structure of beams and columns is plotted.
The Cycling through the Heide project is located in Maasmechelen. Here the Weg naar Heiwick (between the Steenweg naar As and the Weg naar Zutendaal) was transformed into a new cycle path. A new cycle route is created centrally in the Hoge Kempen National Park. It is included in the cycle route network and connects cycle junction 551 and 550.
The cycle path gradually rises to a height of 6.5 meters between the wooden structure and then - after 30 meters - descends again.
A support point is provided every three meters, with the exception of the road to Zutendaal, where the span is 15 meters. Each support point consists of two vertical wooden trusses that are supported by wide concrete 'sleepers'. Concrete floor gratings are placed between the walls that form the deck of the bicycle bridge. With the choice of concrete, the focus is on cycling comfort: the material provides the necessary grip on slippery surfaces and ensures a flat road surface with the right rolling resistance and skid resistance.
