Data trustee for access to vehicle data, vehicle functions and vehicle resources (DFR)
Part 2: Operational Concept
Currently, according to Regulation (EU) No. 2018/858, access to vehicle data, functions (e.g. deletion of fault codes of a control unit) and resources is only possible via direct wired access to the vehicle via direct wired access to the on-board interface (OBD) with the respective proprietary diagnostic system of the vehicle manufacturer. Furthermore, it is possible to carry out software updates (adaptation of the software of ECUs). This makes it possible for third parties (e.g. brand-independent workshops) to offer services equivalent to those provided by the respective vehicle manufacturer.
However, remote access to vehicle data, functions and resources opens up completely new possibilities for business models that require certain data quality and quantity:
On the one hand, the data can be used during operation to gain insights about the vehicle, which enables the corresponding derivation of recommendations for the driver and owner (up to maintenance recommendations).
On the other hand, updates or reprogramming (within the framework of the applicable type approval regulations), problem solving and the like in connection with access to functions and resources can be offered wirelessly and thus at any time and in any place.
The aim of this contract, which is part of a larger project to implement the data trustee model according to the coalition agreement, is to develop and evaluate possible alternatives for the functional, organizational and technical design of a trustee for access to vehicle data, functions and resources (DFR).
