Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG is the largest infrastructure operator of public seaports in Germany. Along the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony, Niedersachsen Ports operates port facilities and port areas.
Wilhelmshaven is the third largest seaport and the only deep-water port in Germany. It is located on the Jade federal waterway and essentially consists of two areas, the outer harbour, which is open to the tide at deep water, and the outer harbour, which is open to the tide, and the
world's largest double locks accessible tide-free Inner Harbour.
The good seaward access with a short area and great water depths predestines the seaport of Wilhelmshaven as a multifunctional port for solid and liquid bulk cargo as well as for container traffic with megaliners. The handling of fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil and gas (LNG) makes the port Germany's largest energy hub. In addition, there are numerous services for onshore and offshore wind energy. The Inner Port handles a variety of general cargo and bulk cargo, as well as offshore and project cargo. Another focus here is on maritime services from several shipyards and shipping-related companies.
The international requirements set out in the International Ship and Port Facilities Code (ISPS Code) apply to the port facilities at the Voslapper Groden (UVG) transhipment facility in the Outer Harbour and Hannoverkai in the Inner Harbour of the Wilhelmshaven seaport. For this purpose, these port areas were surrounded by a fence system and appropriate access for passenger and road traffic was created.
