The western station canal bascule bridge in Hamburg is to be renewed as part of the basic repair. The movable bridge is located in the district of Harburg and carries the road Kanalplatz in the Harburg inland port over the western station canal. It is a two-lane road with a two-lane cycle path (Veloroute 10) on the north side. There are also walkways on both sides. Located in a core area, the bridge is surrounded by restaurants, shops and the
Port industry. The western station canal serves the waterside connection of some companies. Northwest of the bridge is the canal square, which is used, among other things, for events. To the southwest is a public car park behind the Schalthaus.
During the basic repair, the abutments should be preserved as far as possible. The superstructure and the drive technology are to be renewed taking into account the requirements of monument protection. In addition, the switch house is also to be renovated. On the basis of the preliminary planning, it will be finally decided whether the bridge should be restored as a movable bridge. Alternative
it should be determined taking into account the protection of historical monuments.
