Museum of Hamburg History - Redesign of the permanent exhibition / exhibition and media planning

The MHG, founded in 1908, is today one of the 3 large and important urban history museums in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which are combined in the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation. It is one of the largest and nationally and internationally most important urban and regional history museums in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The museum was built from 1908 to 1918 according to plans by Fritz Schuhmacher and opened in 1922 under the first director Otto Laufer. The building has been a listed building since 1976. It is surrounded on the back and sides by the Planten un Blomen park, the entrance portal of the museum faces a busy street with its forecourt.

The listed building has a gross floor area of 19 556 m 2 , the net room area is 17,247 m 2 , which extends over 5 floors including the basement and ground floor. The areas for the special exhibition (currently approx. 550 m 2 ) are located next to other usable areas such as the library and 2 lecture halls on the ground floor. The permanent exhibition will cover an area of 5 011 m in future 2 starting on the 1st floor.

The location and floor plan of the building as well as a space requirement plan and possible conversions can be found in the attached documents "Modernization of the Museum of Hamburg History" (see Annexes 5-9).

The museum currently exhibits Hamburg history from the 8th century to the present day over 3 floors. Different topics of the city's history, city society and urban development such as B. Aspects of everyday and living culture, art and cultural history, economic and social history, trade, the Hanseatic League, the impact of the Port of Hamburg and the Elbe on the city are shown, but also important events such as B. the great fire or cholera in the 19th century or the protest movements in the 20th century. The history of the Jews in Hamburg plays a special role. In the future, the topics of (post-) colonialism, the diversity of urban society, music and media as well as sport and clubs will take up more space than before. Cultural diversity and cultural transfer, social and cultural commitment as an identity-creating factor, and current issues will be dealt with more intensively and highlighted as such.

The spectrum of objects ranges from paintings, sculptures, textiles, everyday and everyday objects, photographs to large, expansive installations and / or media stations.

The exhibition has so far been visited by around 100,000 visitors a year.

In order to continue to fulfill its role as an important, modern and future-oriented house in the future and to be able to meet today's requirements for museums and exhibitions, necessary and contemporary changes must be made in the entire building and the associated redesign of the permanent exhibition.

For the overall modernization project, both a brochure by Sybille Kramer Architects (as of January 2018, see Appendix 6) and a project description by the MHG (as of September 2018, see Appendix 5) were developed a few years ago, the majority of which are still in existence.

As part of the object planning for the entire building, based on the original concept, the "Fritz Schumacher's Rooms" are to be opened and merged, which have been separated from each other or changed in the course of the museum's history. This will also affect areas of the future permanent exhibition. Attractive offers and tours through the exhibition areas that work both spatially and in terms of content are to be created for visitors, all of which can be accessed without barriers.

A continuous, close exchange and a definition of interfaces with the building construction architect will be necessary.

Concepts that intervene in the listed building fabric also require close coordination with the monument protection office.

The entire modernization and refurbishment measures should, as far as possible, take place while the ground floor and the administrative area are in operation. An extension of the building is not planned. The exhibits on display in the building areas to be modernized will be successively outsourced before the renovation work begins. After completion of the renovation, the refurbishment will take place.
