Description:
Germanisches Nationalmuseum - Renovation of the South and Southwest Building - Exhibition Design

Exhibition design according to HOAS, work phases 1-7

New concept 19th century, south building

Lot 1 - Redesign 19th century, south building

The Germanic National Museum, founded in 1852 by Hans Freiherr von und zu Aufseß and housed at its current location since 1857, consists of a series of buildings and components from four eras:

- the medieval Carthusian monastery with church, refectory, small and large cloister and the monks' houses

- the historicist museum buildings until 1920, of which only the gallery building with lapidary and hall of honour as well as the south-west building are preserved after war destruction

- the buildings of the reconstruction of the 1950s to 1970s by Sep Ruf

- the extension completed in 1993 by the Hamburg architectural group Me di um

With the exception of the deep depot under construction in the large monastery courtyard, the construction measures in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum have since been limited to the renovation of the existing buildings. The renovation of the gallery building by German Bestelmeyer has been completed, the renovation and refurnishing of the medieval hall is in progress and should be completed in 2023.

After completion of the deep depot, the next major renovation phase is the south- and south-west building for the re-establishment of the permanent exhibition area on the 19th century, which crosses genres and collections, and individual specialist collections (musical instruments, weapons and hunting culture).

The two buildings to be renovated, the south-west building and the south-west building, are connected by the south staircase. The buildings, like the entire holdings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, are under monument protection and are registered as individual monuments in the list of monuments of the city of Nuremberg.

South building with south staircase: Built in the course of the post-war reconstruction of the museum in the years 1963-67 by the architect Sep Ruf as a groundbreaking four-storey museum building. Reinforced concrete construction with generous glass façade to the north and largely closed solid wall to the south and east. The three upper floor ceilings jump back further and further, like showcase tabs, symbolizing the purpose of the house. On the ground floor is the collection of musical instruments, on the first floor the collection on the history of clothing. The second and third floors house the folklore and folk piety collections. The current state largely corresponds to the time of origin.

The exhibition design will be awarded in two lots. Lot 1 comprises the new concept for the 19th century, including the "Bauernstuben" and the collection of musical instruments, and extends over the entire south-facing building as well as the two upper floors of the south-west building.

The content concept of both exhibition areas has not yet been completed.

More detailed descriptions can be found in the tender documents.

New concept for the collection of weapons and hunting culture, ground floor of the southwest building

Lot 2 - Redesign of the Collection of Weapons and Hunting Culture, Ground Floor Southwest Building

The buildings, like the entire holdings of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, are under monument protection and are registered as individual monuments in the list of monuments of the city of Nuremberg.

Southwest building: Built around 1900 as a collection building by the architect and then museum director Gustav von Bezold as a neo-Gothic, three-storey solid building with sandstone façade, tracery windows and steeply inclined gable roof. Renovated by Sep Ruf after war damage without structural ornamentation, the building now houses the Gewerbemuseum collection on the ground floor, the so-called Knights' Hall, the "Bauernstuben" on the first floor and the 19th century collection on the second floor.

The exhibition design will be awarded in two lots. Lot 2 comprises the new concept of the collection "Weapons and Hunting Culture" in the historicizing "Knights' Hall" on the ground floor of the southwest building and is not closely related to the 19th century in terms of content or space.

The content concept of both exhibition areas has not yet been completed.
