Description:
Test environment BALIS - GH2 supply / gas distribution station

DLR is currently setting up the "BALIS" test environment on the Innovation Campus in Empfingen, Baden Württemberg, Germany. The test environment is used to develop and investigate components for fuel cell-based powertrains in aircraft. For the imminent commissioning of the facility, the supply of gaseous hydrogen to the plant must be ensured. For this purpose, on the one hand, the supply and, if necessary, storage of gaseous hydrogen must be guaranteed for a limited period of time. On the other hand, a panel is to be developed and supplied, which offers the possibility of connecting hydrogen from different supply sources to the plant. The delivery services will be put out to tender in 2 lots.

Supply of the plant with gaseous hydrogen

The supply system to be supplied in LOS I will serve to temporarily supply the BALIS test field at the Empfingen site with gaseous hydrogen.

The hydrogen is delivered by truck. At the site, the bidder must provide a suitable compressed gas storage facility for the duration of the supply. This can be either a mobile storage system (trailer or mobile high-pressure storage system) or a stationary storage system. The selected storage tank can be refilled after emptying by the bidder on site or replaced by an already filled storage tank.

To extract the hydrogen, the storage facility is equipped with a transfer panel (SPL), which is also provided by the bidder for the useful life. The transfer panel provides the pressure at a fixed value in the range between 5 and 10 bar(g).

The hydrogen is then routed via a compressed gas pipeline to a gas distribution station (routing panel, RPL).

The scope of supply also includes the nitrogen line from the compressed gas cylinder storage to the transfer panel.

The delivered system is to be handed over to the customer in tested condition.

Gas distribution station for the BALIS test field

The delivery service tendered in LOT II includes the construction of an H2 supply infrastructure and consists of the following deliverables:

1. Design, manufacture and supply of a device, hereinafter referred to as a routing panel (RPL), which enables the supply of the plant from different hydrogen sources. For this purpose, the RPL has connections for the following hydrogen-carrying pipes and enables the connection of one hydrogen source to the BALIS test field:

a. Wasserstoffleitung (Gas) vom GH2 Supply Panel (SPL)

b. Hydrogen line (gas) from the H2 gas cylinder storage

c. Connection for a hydrogen line (gas) from a (still to be installed) LH2 evaporator. This connection is to be designed as a blind nozzle (branch with pipe connection and valve, tightly flanged).

d. A compressed hydrogen gas line that establishes the connection between the hydrogen collection line of the GH2 Routing Panel and the interface to the fuel cell test field.

2. All necessary equipment for the safe operation of the system, such as operating devices, safety fittings, hydrogen sensors, safety valves, etc.

3. Connection of the RPL to the connection point of the BALIS test field.

4. One-time inspection/commissioning of the delivered system
