The Day of Urban Development Promotion is a joint initiative of the Federal Government, the Länder, the Association of German Cities and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities.
Since 2015, cities and municipalities throughout Germany have been celebrating Urban Development Day on a Saturday in May. Since 2017, the motto of the day of action has been "We in the neighborhood". This year, more than 500 cities and municipalities participated with around 700 events. On the occasion of the day of action, the municipalities showed how they create attractive neighbourhoods, city and district centres and promote lively neighbourhoods with funds from urban development funding and with the participation of citizens.
Every year, a kick-off event in a municipality forms the "official" start of the Day of Urban Development Promotion. The event will be attended by the heads of the BMWSB and the State Ministry of Construction as well as a representative of the municipality that organises the event. The kick-off event provides additional public attention to the day of action. In 2023 it took place in Ulm. The day of action also invites people to participate in the development of their own city and community.
The events, from city walks, construction site inspections, workshops, city rallies, open days to exhibitions and neighbourhood festivals, celebrate the diversity of urban development funding and provide information about projects, plans and successes.
The events of the cities and municipalities are supported by a joint framework communication between the federal government, the states and municipal umbrella associations as well as by conceptual and organizational work aids for the cities and municipalities.
