As part of the federal funding programme "National Urban Development Projects", the city of Hanau was selected with 17 other outstanding projects throughout Germany with the project of redesigning a Centre for Democracy and Diversity. With this investment programme, the federal government has been promoting forward-looking investment and conceptual projects in the field of urban development in Germany since 2014. The city of Hanau is planning to implement a Centre for Democracy and Diversity in Hanau's city centre in response to the attacks of February 2020 in order to take a stand against racism and xenophobia.
The intended property, the former bank building with two integrated apartments, is located in a prominent location on Kanaltorplatz opposite the post office. The three-storey building with its approx. 2,500m² gross floor area is not only to be upgraded architecturally, infrastructurally and energetically, but rather to create a place for democracy and a new address for the citizens.
Special attention is paid to the multifunctional playable interior design of the ground floor and to an attractive façade design.
Planning for the new concept is to take place in 2023/24.
For this purpose, planning services are to be awarded in accordance with HOAI 2021, Part 3 Object Planning §33 ff in conjunction with Annex 10.

Planning is scheduled to begin in mid-2023. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2024 with gutting of the existing building. Completion is scheduled for mid-2026. For this purpose, services are to be awarded in accordance with HOAI 2021, Part 3 Object Planning §33 ff in conjunction with Annex 10. The work phases 2 - 8 are to be commissioned.
