The purpose of the monitoring program is to assess the fate of the pollutants in the environment and the potential effects that the pollutants have in freshwater ecosystems. The aims of the program are the following:
- Report the pollutant levels at multiple levels in the food chain
- Estimate the degree of accumulation of pollutants in organisms and in the food chain
- Assess the potential effects of the different levels in the food chain
- Assess the contributions from different sources and their impact on the state of the environment
- Consider the condition as a basis for evaluating the need for action and the effects of measures
