The HKI was founded in 1991 and is now a state-of-the-art research institute with 420 employees. These are dedicated to the research topics of infection biology and new natural substances from microorganisms that can be used to fight infections. Due to the further scientific profiling and the associated personal development of the HKI, the existing building capacities are no longer sufficient. The former laboratory houses 1 and 2 were therefore demolished and the new HKI building with a gross floor area of 5 761 m was built on the resulting free space
