The town of Borna, which includes 3 villages, namely Borna, Eula with the districts of Eula, Gestewitz, Haubitz and Kesselshain and the Wyhra Valley with the districts of Neukirchen, Wyhra, Thräna and Zedtlitz, is located in the southern part of the Leipzig Lowland Bay in the natural area of the Southern Leipzig Mining District. In today's surroundings of Borna, extensive lignite deposits were already established in the Tertiary period, the extraction of which in open-cast mining areas has had a lasting impact on the landscape around the city for more than 100 years. South-east of Borna is the scenic Kohrener Land. Incidentally, the city of Borna is located in the metropolitan region of Central Germany and is about 33 km from Leipzig, 50 km from Gera, 58 km from Chemnitz, 67 km from Halle and 113 km from Dresden.
Borna is the traditional centre of the region in the south of Leipzig. Originally, the city was characterized by the agriculture of the surrounding region and by crafts and small industry. This imprint was subsequently displaced by lignite and its mining.
At present, the city is primarily an administrative centre (administrative centre of the district of Leipzig) and a residential location. In addition, several large employers are based here, which are also known nationwide. The central area of the core town of Borna has a large number of services of general interest (daycare centres, primary schools, secondary schools, grammar schools, medical care and public administration) as well as leisure and cultural activities.
The city of Borna has an urban development concept "Living centres", "Living city centre" as of 24.01.2023. The previous SOP funding area for the city centre corresponded to the city centre of Borna with a size of 21.9 ha. This funding program expired at the end of 2022. Since there is a further considerable need in the central core city, an extended study area of approx. 73 ha was determined in order to ultimately be able to provide a suitable additional area setting for the new application in the LZP relevant here. The now planned development area amounts to approx. 33.07 ha and concerns in particular the historic old town.
On 13.09.2023, the city of Borna has received a preliminary grant notification for the programme year 2023 for the overall urban development measure in the above-mentioned funding area for the period 01.01.2023 to 31.12.2027 with a grant of approx. EUR 3.65 million.
The implementation period of the overall measure begins on 13.09.2023 and is expected to end on 31.12.2036.
For the programme support in the federal-state programme "Living Centres - Preservation and Development of City and Town Centres" (LZP), a competent and professionally suitable programme facilitator is to be found within the framework of the call for proposals.
