Description:
Research Project: Quick Recovery of Flight Recorder Data

The over-arching objective of this research study is to identify and assess technical solutions for the automatic wireless data transmission to quickly recover flight recorder data after an accident in a remote land area or an oceanic area for the purpose of faster understanding of the causal and contributory factors of an accident.

Main aspects of the research:

— factors which might affect the chance of successful wireless transmission of flight recorder data in case of an accident;

— possible technical solutions for automatic wireless transmission of flight recorder data in case of an accident;

— selection of two technical solutions which seems achievable in a not-so distant future, their challenges, limitations and legal implications;

— simulation of selected technical solutions in conditions representative of an accident;

— two consultations of the stakeholder's group;

— conclusion on the concept of automatic wireless transmission of flight recorder data for the purpose of safety investigation.
