The aim of hiring a vessel for the Mareano mission is to map the seabed's geological, biological and chemical environment in order to generate knowledge for the work on the management plans for Norwegian sea areas, in accordance with identified mapping needs. Knowledge from Mareano is continually published on, amongst other things, www.mareano.no

The Mareano programme is multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional, and the mapping is carried out in a collaboration between the Norwegian Mapping Authority, the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) and the Institute of Marine Research (HI). The programme is managed by a programme group, whilst five ministries make up the steering committee.
