The aim of the procedure is to connect a new 5-storey research building with laboratory space to the existing building for the Leibnitz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, the Hans Knöll Institute (HKI) on the Beutenberg Campus in Jena.

The HKI was founded in 1991 and is now a state-of-the-art research institute with 420 employees. They are dedicated to the research topics of infection biology and new natural products from microorganisms that can be used to fight infections. As a result of HKI's further scientific profiling and the associated personnel development, existing building capacities are no longer sufficient. The former laboratory houses 1 and 2 were therefore demolished and the resulting free space was the construction of the new HKI building with a total gross floor area of 5,761 m 2.
