Geotechnics studies soil/structure interaction and draws on the basics of geology, soil mechanics, rock mechanics and structures.
In parallel to the soil mechanics of loose materials, rock mechanics deals with rigid materials and cemented geomaterials deal with a category of intermediate materials between soils and rocks.
The main purpose of geotechnical studies is to study the subsurface for the construction of structures (pavilions, buildings, roads, engineering structures, etc.), and in particular the definition of foundations, but also in the context of diagnostics for damaged structures. They also deal with the phenomena of ground movement (sliding, subsidence and others), deformation (settling under loads) and mechanical strength.
