Description:
Specialist source transducer needed for underwater acoustic testing at low frequencies, with operational capabilities up to at least 1 kHz, deployable without specialist lifting equipment and robust for various environmental conditions.
Generation of sufficient sound energy at low frequencies requires a specialist source transducer designed specifically for use at low frequencies. NPL has a growing requirement to deliver underwater acoustic test and calibration at extended low frequencies. This extended low frequency range is to operate primarily in the region of 10 Hz to 500 Hz but with operational capabilities to extend to at least 1 kHz. The transducer is to operate as a projector, driven with conventional amplification. The transducer will be typically used at relatively shallow depths of approximately 15 m but also needs the capability to maintain performance at hydrostatic pressures equivalent to depths of up to 100 m.

This new source transducer should be easily deployable, without the need for specialist lifting equipment, and be suitably robust to operate in a variety of environmental conditions.
