Provision of planning services in connection with the implementation of a deep boring (exploratory boring for deep geothermal energy)
LOT-0001
2025-131 SWDU Planning Services for a Deep Boring (Exploratory Boring for Deep Geothermal Energy) in Duisburg.
1. Description of the Exploratory Boring for Deep Geothermal Energy
The Duisburg public utilities are planning to conduct an exploratory boring to determine deep geothermal potentials in the immediate vicinity of their headquarters. A vertical boring is planned to reach depths of up to approximately 4,200 meters to uncover and test the potentially usable thermal formations of the coal limestone and the massive limestone. If successful, after an intermediate 3D seismic survey, a deviation of the vertical boring into the coal limestone or the massive limestone in the area of a fault zone is planned. A conceptual study (pre-planning) for this procedure has already been prepared.
2. Task Description for Planning Services for the Deep Boring
The Duisburg public utilities are looking for a drilling planner who will create an execution plan based on the conceptual study, support Duisburg public utilities in the tendering and awarding of the executing trades, and supervise the execution of the drilling and testing works. The drilling planner should cover the roughly described scope of services below:
- Regulatory approval management
- Drilling site construction
- Geological drilling supervision (e.g., Well Site Geology)
- Borehole geophysics
- Drilling technology
- Hydraulic testing
- Seismological monitoring
A funding application will be submitted for the boring according to the Master Plan Geothermal Energy of the state of NRW. The associated project outline has already been recognized as suitable by the relevant authority. The funding program is time-limited, resulting in a binding deadline for the measure. The boring is to be completed, including full documentation, by June 30, 2028, at the latest by August 31, 2028. Planning work is expected to commence by March 1, 2026 at the latest.
