Description:
Structural engineering for the construction project "Renovation of the Stadthalle Braunschweig"

Preparation of a structural design as part of the renovation of a listed town hall

The city of Braunschweig, represented by Struktur-Förderung Braunschweig GmbH, is planning an extensive renovation of the building fabric and technical building equipment of the Braunschweig City Hall, which was built in 1965.

Since the entire planning is subject to the restrictions of monument protection, a special focus is placed on the constant optimisation of contemporary use in favour of the listed substance during the renovation of the town hall.

The task of the contractor is to work together with the object planners, the specialist planners of the TGA, fire protection, etc. to design and develop the supporting structure, which allows an optimal implementation of the requirements described in more detail in the task description against the background of the restrictions on monument preservation. The basis for the contractor is the existing planning for the supporting structure, including soil surveys and preliminary considerations.

In this context, all planning services necessary for the project must be provided by the contractor.

As part of his work, the contractor advises the planning and construction management team on all aspects of structural design and prepares the necessary statics, formwork and reinforcement plans and steel and position plans.

The existing parking deck may need to be upgraded.

In addition, a weatherproof enclosure of the town hall (scaffolding statics) is required.

Among other things, statics are required for demolition planning and shoring planning.

Through the necessary roof renovation and the examination of possible and necessary upgrades of the wide-span steel structure of the roof of the large hall, including a possibly necessary load extension for the planning of additional loads for a PV system to be installed as well as a retention roof structure and for the stage technology, further services in the structural area are to be provided.

Attention throughout the building is also focused on optimising openings for the new TGA to be installed (max. gain in room height), for which sensible solutions must be found in monument protection that are both feasible and acceptable.

The exposed aggregate concrete façade panels (listed building) require an inspection including a renewal of the suspension structure. In this case, proof must be provided that there is no risk to stability and durability during removal, refurbishment and reinstallation.

If the subsequently erected canopy of the town hall is to be demolished and a new canopy is planned and erected in this area, statics are also required here.

The static specifications for intermediate construction stages, for structural installations and for structurally relevant constructions, e.g. for load distribution of ventilation units on the roof surfaces, are also included in the scope of services.

In addition to coordination with all those involved in the planning, close cooperation with the construction management during implementation is also necessary in order to be able to carry out detailing during construction during component exploration after dismantling.
