GSM-R (Global System Mobile for Railways) is a digital radio system that has been developed to specifically satisfy the mobile communications requirements of railways. GSM-R is mandated under EU Interoperability Directives and has been selected by Iarnrod Éireann (IÉ) as the replacement technology for the existing obsolete analogue train radio system.
IÉ intends to establish a 5-year framework agreement with the option to extend up to a maximum of 8 years (5 +1 + 1 + 1).
The scope of the agreement includes the following:
(i) the supply of GSM-R cab radios for the IÉ fleet. It is estimated that IE will require approximately 400 No cab radios over the term of this agreement;
(ii) ‘First of Class (FOC)’ fitment for up to 10 classes of fleet
It is also proposed to enter into a long term maintenance agreement with the cab radio supplier, which will provide technical support for a period of up to 10 years.
