Description:
Helmut-Kohl-Allee (B44) - Main construction work Westbrücke - Contract award package 09 western part

Construction work for the construction of the west bridge over the freight yard and the supra-regional tracks at Ludwigshafen main station, as well as the access ramp and the traffic facilities

The Westbrücke is part of the overall Helmut Kohl Allee project. The overall Helmut Kohl Allee (HKA) project is intended to replace the existing B44 from the A 650 motorway (Ziegeleiweg area) to the abutment area of the Rhine crossing (Kurt Schumacher Bridge). As part of this contract, the civil engineering of the West Bridge, including the directly adjacent road construction, is to be constructed.

The required civil engineering of the West Bridge extends from the B44 (area "Ziegeleiweg") via the freight and main station Ludwigshafen and over the Lorientallee to the intersection of Heinigstraße/Pasadenaallee. The civil engineering consists mainly of building 532, which is the actual west bridge and spans the area of the Deutsche Bahn tracks.

The west bridge consists of two 10-span superstructures in steel composite construction, each of which is made of two welded hollow steel girders and reinforced concrete deck slab. The spans are between 30 m and 60 m. The hollow steel girders have a height of approx. 2.1 m. The total length of the bridge structure is about 450 m.

In the western area of the West Bridge, the abutment will be built at the beginning of the project and preparations will be made to direct traffic from the currently used B 44 to the new West Bridge after completion of the West Bridge. In order to maintain traffic relations, a temporary bypass will be built in the area of Ziegeleiweg during the measure and partially dismantled. In order to be able to construct the abutment at the beginning, sheet pile walls are driven in as a first measure so that the existing wing walls can be dismantled afterwards. The dismantling of the wing walls in this area is necessary due to the space available in this area in order to be able to construct the abutment in the west.

The eastern area of the west bridge ends with the construction of the retaining walls in the area of the Pasadenaalle. These retaining walls will enable future traffic on the B44 to connect at ground level with inner-city traffic in the area of the Heinigstraße/Pasadenaallee intersection. For the construction of the retaining walls in the area of Pasadenaallee, the pedestrian and cycle path underpasses and an existing retaining wall must be dismantled in advance. In the course of the individual construction phases in the area of Pasadenaallee, the corresponding road construction measures are also to be carried out.

Between abutment west and abutment east, 18 piers are built, which are mainly located on the premises of the Deutsche Bahn. As soon as the abutments and piers have been constructed, the box girder steel girders will be successively brought up to height in order to be able to complete the steel composite bridge afterwards.
