The Foundation of the German Maritime Museum (DMM) plans to reactivate the main building "Meeresmuseum", which is located in the historic monastery complex

St. Katharinen is located in the old town of Stralsund. Extensive new construction, renovation and modernization work is planned.

The German Maritime Museum intends to build the property's buildings at the Maritime Museum site, Katharinenberg 14 — 20, 18439 Stralsund

Fundamentally to modernize, to renovate and to make accessible.

The character of a classic natural history museum in a medieval monastery building should be retained, but with new accents

Underpinned and made more attractive for the visitors. In addition to a new concept that is clearly delimited from the OZEANEUM, the architecture is to come into its own.

The architecture and historical structure of the monastery complex are to be emphasized with clear visual axes in the Katharinenhalle and additional openings to the Stralsund Museum, and the cloister as the central axis of the monastery complex should be more visible.

Entrance and checkout areas are designed to be more inviting for visitors, while shop and service areas are designed to meet the requirements of a modern museum

Adapted and made accessible outside of opening hours. The entire museum tour is said to be through additional elevators

Barrier-free.

The aquariums in the basement are to be modern and equipped with more energy-efficient, low-maintenance technology.

The following submeasures are part of the project to reactivate and modernize the Maritime Museum:

- Redesign of the entire forecourt (Nordhof);

- Redesign of the foyer including the museum shop;

- modernization and redesign of the existing exhibition and aquariums;

- Construction of a large fish aquarium;

- relocation of the preparation workshops;

- Redesign of the current bistro area in front of the turtle aquarium.
