The service includes the airborne digital recording of marine vertebrates (seabirds and marine mammals) in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The planning and execution of the flight surveys is carried out in close consultation with the BfN. The evaluated survey data are used to calculate the distribution, abundances and trends for the assessment of the status of marine vertebrates in the German North Sea and Baltic Sea with the help of indicators. Depending on the season and/or location, either marine mammals or seabirds are the focus of the surveys in accordance with the planning specified by the BfN and the responsible EEZ research project 3. The organisation and implementation of the surveys must be carried out in close cooperation with the BfN.
