The Client requires a concept design and investigative work that considers the refurbishment of Abernant Tunnel for the purpose of creating an Active Travel Route. The structure is owned by Highways England, the western access to the portal is on land owned by Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council and the Eastern portal access is privately owned, however Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council has secured a 2m wide right of way from the Taff Trail to the portal entrance. The tunnel runs underneath land which is owned by Welsh Government and Rhondda Cynon Taff. The Client requires a desk-top study of the feasibility studies to date and investigations of the site to provide key details on condition and information that will facilitate the design of refurbishment of the tunnel. This will enable the Client to determine appropriate actions and next steps for the design stage. This stage of work focuses on establishing the information required for the design and development of a delivery plan, program, costs, and risks to RIBA stage 2. The Scope covers various survey work including LIDDAR, Air quality and drainage surveys, confirmation of shaft locations, consulting with Natural Resources Wales and any required intrusive works and discussions around potential options for refurbishment.
