Description:
Demolition and replacement of the cantilever plate on the Old Town shore, Cologne

The cantilever plate, which has been projecting over the banks of the Rhine on the Old Town shore between Deutzer Brücke and Fischmarkt since 1963 to widen the Rhine promenade over a length of around 235 meters, has to be demolished and replaced. The reason for this was the use of the Sigma oval St145/160 prestressing steel type, which was widespread at the time and which, according to current knowledge, can be prone to stress corrosion cracking. The cantilever panel is to be erected at the same location with the same dimensions.

The existing structure in the same place must be completely removed in order to produce the replacement new cantilever panel. The existing building is located in the old town of Cologne, between the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Deutz Bridge. It is an approximately 234 m long cantilever panel that overhangs the Rhine between 4.10 m and 5.50 m. Two landing stages of Cologne-Düsseldorfer Deutsche Rheinschifffahrt GmbH (KD) and their sales pavilion are currently located on the cantilever panel. The construction process is designed in such a way that one dock can always be used by KD. For this reason, the replacement of the cantilever panel will take place in two construction phases. Due to the severely limited access to the construction site, the direct location in the old town and the load limitation of the Deutzer Bridge to 3.5 t, demolition material is removed and the finished parts are delivered via the waterway (Rhine). The cantilever plate must be demolished as quietly and with as little vibration as possible. Noise barriers must be set up.

The new design of the cantilever panel provides for a prestressed precast construction with in-situ concrete, which is also to be pre-stressed. The existing bank wall from 1890 serves as a support on the water side, and a strip foundation serves as a landside support. In the course of the construction project, the outdoor facilities in the Rheingarten, which is located behind the cantilever panel, are also to be redesigned in some areas. It is planned to design the surface (natural stone covering with basalt lava) and the railing of the cantilever slab in line with the planned measure Am Leystapel, the Rhine promenade between the Chocolate Museum and the Deutz Bridge.
