Belgium is facing a massive and unexpected influx of applicants for international protection that is superimposed on the reception of refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine and benefiting, as such, from temporary protection status. Permanent reception facilities have a significant shortage of available places, so many applicants, including families with children and unaccompanied minors, are currently homeless. The Government has therefore decided to create some 1500 temporary reception places as a matter of urgency and before winter and mandated the FPS Home Affairs to do so.
