The Niedersächsische Landesbehörde für Straßenbau und Verkehr (NLStBV) plans the coastal motorway A 20. The route of the first section of the A 20 (length: approx. 13 km) starts at the existing motorway A 28 and ends immediately east of the planned motorway junction A 20 / A 29. The first section of the A 20 also includes a large distance away from the CEF on the former training ground Friedrichsfeld. At the same time as the construction of the first section, there will be a renewal of the main road including the removal of the streamer on the A 29 in the area of AK A 20 / A 29 over a length of 6.3 km.

Due to a planned integration of the Weser tunnel (B 437) into the future A 20, an extensive retrofitting of the tunnel to state-of-the-art technology is already being carried out parallel to the production of the first construction phase of the A 20.
