Operation and maintenance of the Saimaa Canal 2024 - 2028

The procurement covers the operation and maintenance tasks of the Saimaa Canal administered by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to the extent specified in the contract documents.

The properties related to the acquisition are located in Lappeenranta and in an area leased by the State of Finland from the Russian Federation.

The locations are indicated in the tender documentation.

This contract includes operation and maintenance services for the Saimaa Canal.

The Saimaa Canal is a 43 km long canal route from the Gulf of Finland to Lake Saimaa, of which the first 20 km are located in an area leased from the Russian Federation and the remaining 23 km on the Finnish side. In the Saimaa Canal, the ascent from the Gulf of Finland to Lake Saimaa is approximately 76 meters through eight locks, of which 5 locks are on the leased area side and 3 locks are on the Finnish side. About 31 km of the length of the canal is dug channel channel and the rest is fairway in lake areas.

The locks of the Saimaa Canal are: Brusnitchnoe(Juustila), Iskrovka(Särkijärvi), Cvetotchnoe(Rättijärvi), Ilistoe(Lietjärvi), Pälli, Soskua, Mustola and Mälkiä.

The Saimaa Canal has 7 openable flip bridges included in the contract. Six of the bridges are in connection with the locks and one is separate in Kansola. Four of the bridges connected to the locks are on the leased area side and two on the Finnish side.

In addition to locks and bridges to be opened, the other infrastructure included in the contract in connection with the canal covers the built environment of the entire canal area: ramps (laid and throwing ramps) of the excavated canal section, upper and lower harbours of locks, waiting quays, fairway edge lights and lighting, water regulation equipment (shovels, overflow dams and bypass pipes), pumping stations, edge roads, earth dams and subordinates, operation centres, emergency power buildings and other separate properties, fixed bridges, safety dams, roads, security fences and a cable network covering the entire canal.

The annual traffic season of the Saimaa Canal is 6–12 months. The length of the traffic season is determined by maintenance work and weather conditions.
