JRC-Karlsruhe plans to purchase a portable electrically cooled high-purity germanium detector in order to support training through the European Nuclear Security Training Centre (Eusectra) in the area of detection and response to the illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive material and to carry out gamma spectrometric measurements on nuclear materials. The equipment is intended to be used in frontline officer (security, military, police and customs) and mobile expert team trainings to complement the radiation detection equipment and meet the needs of the field operative.

A portable electronically cooled high-purity germanium detector-based radionuclide identifier, i.e. a compact gamma spectroscopy system consists of:

— detector,

— cooling system,

— electronics and multichannel analyser,

— analysis software.
